HISTORY AND INSTRUCTOR CERTIFICATION

Who was Joseph Pilates?

Born in Germany in 1883, Joseph Pilates committed his life to the study of mind and body and is recognized as a pioneer in the field of physical therapy.  Frail as a child, through self-study he became strong and physically agile.  He later grew to become an accomplished skier, diver, gymnast, boxer and instructor in self-defense.

After interment in WWI, Pilates designed exercise apparatus.  This system formed the foundation for his style of body conditioning he called “Contrology” which he brought to New York City in 1926.

Joe taught a wide array of clientele from businessmen to the injured war veteran. Dancers quickly realized the merit of his conditioning system and came to his studio to strengthen and rehabilitate their bodies. George Balanchine and Martha Graham discovered his work and realized its benefits.  Today, Pilates has become a widely accepted form of exercise that has an abundance of benefits for people of all ages and fitness levels. Joseph Pilates died in 1968 but passed his life's work onto his protege' Romana Kryzanowska, and a generation of instructors that learned under her, including June Hines .
